Tell us about your background.

I grew up in Minnesota and joined Americorps after college to gain work experience while serving my community. I was a VISTA at Ramsey County Correctional Facility and ended up working there for 14 years as a correctional educator. In 2020, I was ready for a new challenge and transitioned to Harmony Learning Center working as a Workforce and Technology Specialist. I also am a Regional Transition Coordinator for East Metro and ATLAS Transitions Coordinator, helping to plan professional development opportunities related to ABE learners transitioning to work, training and college.

Share about your work at Harmony Learning Center preparing individuals for careers in in-demand occupations.

Harmony Learning Center is an Adult Education program in Maplewood. We serve about 1,000 students every year with our GED, English language and career pathway classes.  Harmony offers Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), ParaEducator, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification programs, all at no cost to students. These programs develop the skills necessary to succeed in rewarding careers

What are some of the main challenges faced by adult learners?

Adult learners are juggling many conflicting roles when they pursue school. Family and work commitments, access to technology, transportation and childcare are common challenges. Career and Technical education organizations can offer flexible schedules, hybrid training, or digital literacy training and navigation to help overcome these barriers.
