The Department of Safety and Inspections is hiring diverse and talented individuals to join our Fire Safety Inspection Division.

The Fire Safety Division is charged with inspections to ensure properties are in compliance with fire and life safety, property and maintenance, and other codes, in all commercial, multi-family residential, and non-owner occupied 1 & 2 family residential dwellings in Saint Paul. We also provide fire engineering services, including plan review and inspection of various fire protective systems.

Responsibilities

Here’s what you can expect to do:

Conducts investigations and performs inspections of residential, business, and vacant properties. Determines compliance with federal and state laws; City codes, ordinances, permits, and licenses; and related property maintenance, use, public health and safety, and right of way regulations. Provides regulatory information regarding the range of licensing, zoning, housing, occupancy, planning, and permit requirements. Inspects property exteriors and interiors and creates appropriate orders of corrective actions and/or summons for non-compliance where applicable. Monitors complex assignments and projects, prepares reports, and completes related documents for investigations, inspections, and reviews. Assists with the coordination efforts of multiple sections, departments, and agencies to address compliance issues. Qualifications

Requirements may be met by one of the following options:

Two years of experience performing investigations, inspections, and/or enforcement actions related to property maintenance and public safety for buildings and residential properties. Thirty college semester credits to include coursework in fire, building, or engineering technology, construction, communications, or any related area and one year of experience performing investigations, inspections, and/or enforcement actions related to property maintenance and public safety for buildings and residential properties. An Associate Degree or 60 college semester credits to include coursework in fire, building, or engineering technology, construction, communications, or any related area.

AND

Obtain certification as a Fire Inspector I or higher by the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board, the National Fire Protection Association-NPQB, or the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress to NFPA 1031 Standards by the end of the probationary period. Candidates who do not complete certification will be separated from the DSI Fire Safety Inspector II classification.

Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License or equivalent out-of-state driver's license.
