Basic Function

 

The current vacancy is in the Law Library department.  The eligibility list created by this vacancy may be used to hire other vacancies in the department or County. 


The current vacancy is for a temporary part-time Law Library Assistant working June through the end of August, three days per week. Those days Thursday and Friday will be required work days; the person hired for this position will be allowed to choose the third day.

Preference will be given to individuals who are pursuing a Library Degree or MLIS.
 

 

The Ramsey County Law Library is seeking to hire a Law Library Assistant. The main responsibilities of this position will include: filing loose leaf and pocket part materials; Creating and posting social media/website content and other promotional content related to law library programs; Promoting law library services within the community, specifically within local libraries in both St. Paul and Ramsey County;  and other tasks as assigned in supporting job duties within the law library.


Temporary assignments work up to a maximum of six months. Candidates chosen to hire into a temporary assignment will not gain any rights or preferences for other permanent, Ramsey County positions.

If an internal candidate is selected, salary will be set in accordance with the personnel rules (i.e., promotion, transfer, or voluntary reduction).

Exam/Screening Process Information

 

This is an unclassified, at-will position, holding a confidential relation to the department head or elected official.   This position requires an open screening and selection process.  There is no exam for this unclassified, at-will, position.  All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be forwarded to the department for consideration.  Please read below for further instructions.
   
 Definition of Unclassified from the Ramsey County Personnel Act:
 Subdivision 1. General. "The appointing authority may discharge employees in the unclassified service with or without cause. Employees in the unclassified service have no right to a grievance appeal from discharge or other disciplinary action under sections 383A.281 to 383A.301. An employee in an unclassified position shall not have tenure but shall be entitled to all benefits associated with tenure such as vacation leave, sick leave, health insurance, and other benefits as determined by the county board."

Responsibilities

Examples of Work Performed

  1. File updates into a variety of loose leaf materials and add supplements to multi-volume sets.
  2. Shelve library materials by arranging them in alphabetical order or according to Library of Congress number.
  3. Plan shelving of materials to give priority to more popular/heavily used items, so that those items will be available to meet patron demand.
  4. Push book carts weighing over 300 pounds and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  5. Check library shelves on a periodic basis to ensure that materials are being maintained in proper sequential or alphabetical order, and reorganize materials as needed.
  6. Maintain and develop the law library website; add user guides and helpful content; develop new applications to reach remote users (e.g. blogs, wikis, social media).
  7. Compile statistical and usage reports.
  8. Staff the circulation desk, check library materials in and out, collect overdue materials, answer phones and route calls, and provide assistance in person or over the phone to customers with general questions.
  9. Provide general information to customers and refer them to librarians for further assistance as needed.
  10. Straighten bookshelves and common areas of the library to maintain orderliness and increase the aesthetic appeal of the facility.
  11. Input on on-line systems such as Microsoft Excel.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalent

 

Experience: Six months library experience or equivalent.

 

Preferred: Paralegal degree or other experience working within a legal field.
