The current vacancy is an intermittent (non-benefit eligible) position available in Clinic 555, Sexual Health Services. This position will not have a regular schedule or regular hours, rather will be utilized to fill in shifts during vacations, sick leave, etc. The minimum requirement is to work at least one shift per month.

To obtain patient/client histories; to perform routine physical exams; to perform diagnostic assessments and create individual treatment plans; to initiate requests for diagnostic procedures; to prescribe, administer and dispense medications according to St. Paul-Ramsey County Department of Public Health and the Social Service departmental guidelines; to be the primary provider, by working autonomously as well as in collaboration with other medical staff, clinicians and physicians to provide health care across the life span with an emphasis on preventive health care; and to perform related duties as assigned.


If an internal candidate is selected, salary will be set in accordance with the personnel rules, i.e. promotion, transfer, or voluntary reduction.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Promote a diverse, culturally competent, and respectful workplace.
  • Provide primary care of patients across the life span by obtaining a complete health history and psychosocial data; performing physical examinations; ordering and evaluating appropriate diagnostic tests; diagnosing common health problems; and prescribing treatments and preventative medicines.
  • Prescribe medications as regulated by individual state nurse practice acts and educate the client about the drug regiments, interactions and side effects.
  • Perform procedures such as cryotherapy; skin biopsy, and long acting reversible contraception insertions/removals.
  • Incorporate nonpharmacologic therapies into practice.
  • Order, perform and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests.
  • Assess for evidence of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. 
  • Develop and implement a plan of care by setting goals and plans mutually acceptable to the patient and evaluate the process and outcome so necessary modifications can be made.
  • Initiate and evaluate the plan of care, document patient progression and refer patients to other needed service providers.
  • Assist clients to identify and use community and social resources through referral.
  • Identify wellness and risk factors, provide health counseling and emotional support, teach positive self-care activities, including problem solving and selection of treatment alternatives.
  • Ensure staff and program compliance with regulatory standards by keeping abreast of pertinent statutory and policy changes.
  • Evaluate teaching strategies by examining the outcome of mutually determined goals.
  • Provide follow up and health maintenance care including appropriate adjustments of medications and further diagnostic testing and evaluation.
  • Provide education and counseling that is research-based and client-centered.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate emergency care.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  As required for licensure. 

Experience:  None. 

Certifications/Licensures: Licensed as a registered Nurse in the State of Minnesota and must have a Nurse Practitioner Certificate in the area of specialization from a recognized Nurse Practitioner program.  Approved or eligible for approval by the Minnesota Board of Nursing for prescription writing privileges. A valid driver’s license.

Substitution:  None.

Preferred: Two years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner. Master’s Degree in Nursing.

Exam/Screening Process Information

The examination for Nurse Practitioner will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on the answers provided. A candidate must pass the training and experience rating in order to be advanced in the process.

Eligible List: The names of all applicants who pass the training and experience rating and file a properly completed application shall be placed on the eligible list for employment as Nurse Practitioner. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for one month or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been posted and their rank on the list. The department may choose to interview any candidate on the eligible list.

Veterans' Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process.
Veterans P reference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
