
Performs expert level work of a complex nature including planning, organizing, and conducting workers compensation claims investigations which requires independent judgment and specialized knowledge of workers compensation processes and procedures. Files all necessary forms per State statute, maintains State and unit timelines, and coordinates, monitors, and approves medical treatment on lost time claims. Performs related duties as required.
Information Specific to this Position: The current position is in downtown Saint Paul in the City Hall Annex Building, working for the Office of Human Resources - Risk Management section. There is flexible scheduling with a typical schedule being 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
The City of Saint Paul is self-insured and self-administers and handles workers compensation medical claims and lost time. The position works with another Senior Compensation Claims Processor in handling the more complex claims and with City departments on the return to work program. Communication is the key competency because this position is a main contact for injured employees, payroll staff, supervisors, nurse case managers, attorneys, rehabilitation consultants, and medical providers.
Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities: Investigates claims and communicates with injured employees. Reviews and monitors open worker compensation active claims, first report of injury forms, and lost time. Answers inquiries and handles reporting to the State of Minnesota, Department of Labor and Industry, and participates in hearings. Communicates workers compensation requirements to City departments. Works with department representatives on the return to work program. Logs claims handling information into claims software application. Acts as point of contact for employees, supervisors, medical providers, attorneys, payroll staff, nurse case managers, and rehabilitation consultants. Communicates workers compensation requirements to City departments. Analyzes and approves payment of medical bills and treatment.
Qualifications
Two years of workers compensation experience, including lost time and/or medical only claims experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Completion of college course work/claims related seminars Claims related certification programs such as, but not limited to, AIC (Associate in Claims), ARM (Associate in Risk Management), and CPCU (Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter).
