Responsibilities

Basic Function

The current vacancies are for full-time and  intermittent Assistant Probation Officers at the Juvenile Detention Center (JDC). This list may be used to fill other vacancies within the department. 
 

To assist professional Community Corrections staff in probation, institution or other case management services by performing designated duties relating to client or resident supervision, treatment or counseling; maintain records, provide transportation to clients and perform other duties to support Probation Officers, detention or other client services, and to perform related duties as assigned. (This is the entry-level class in this class series. Assignment enables employees to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities required for advancement to Assistant Probation Officer 2.); and perform related duties as assigned.


If an internal candidate is selected, salary will be set in accordance with the personnel rules (i.e., promotion, transfer, or voluntary reduction).

Examples of Work Performed

  1. Provide safety and security for services and programs of institutional residents, staff, and visitors by controlling aggressive behavior under the supervision of Probation Officers or divisional staff, facilitate groups and support the implementation of treatment plans; maintain order, provide first aid, search residents, monitor admissions and releases, screen and monitor visitors to the institution, conduct surveillance and security checks of buildings, and monitor security equipment. 
  2. Supervise clients in institutional activities including treatment programs, school attendance, work activities, court order compliance, and compliance with probation conditions; assist in the creation and development of dorm schedules, and structured activities for residents. 
  3. Intervene early with youth to redirect behaviors into pro-social channels, recognize and reward pro-social behavior, assist youth in managing their own behavior by providing coaching and encouragement. 
  4. Record required data and document observations concerning resident behavior; monitor school attendance, child abuse allegations or suspicions, institutional activities; admit and orient new residents to the institution; administer and record medications, escort clients, provide transportation, compile data, complete required institutional reports and necessary documentation; provide orientation for families, new residents, and volunteers. Interview, counsel residents; make recommendations to Probation Officers or Supervisors concerning possible program options and treatment plans; assist in implementing programs; administer pre- and post-testing to residents. 
  5. Under the direction of a shift supervisor, may be responsible for running and providing work direction to a living unit. 
  6. Order supplies, answer telephones, complete work orders for repairs. 
  7. Meet with clients, review and sign probation agreements, review any special conditions of probation; connect clients to in-house, and community programming.
  8. Meet with clients regarding noncompliance; discuss with client ways they can become successful; make determination of client's compliance and report technical violations to Probation Officer. 
  9. Participate in client visits with another staff member on behalf of Probation Officer, or unit request. 
  10. Monitor clients that are in custody, incarcerated, awaiting deportation, on warrant, or have failed to report to probation, or are otherwise unavailable to report to probation. 
  11. Monitor police contacts and booking notices. 
  12. Draft probation violations, update custody credit, complete intake parole violation coverage form and discharge orders; obtain appropriate approvals and signatures.
  13. Document all required data including fax and e-mails into Chronos system; document all required data into CSTS program to show the case is updated or closed.
  14. Prepare law enforcement and LEC calendars; gather and fax probation violations to attorneys, and document activity in Court Services Tracking System (CSTS). 
  15. May staff intake reception window arrange for chemical assessments, schedule clients for orientation, and assign clients to probation office based on their offense and address. 
  16. Depending on assignment, may serve as Community Work Services Coordinator. 
  17. Depending on assignment, may make recommendations based off department guidelines to Probation Officer regarding restitution or victim aide, make suggestions on the amount of the restitution and the legitimacy of the request, send affidavits, draft restitution order for agent review, enter amount ordered in condition and enter restitution payments. 
  18. May transport clients and residents for purpose of placement, detention, school attendance, medical appointments, off-grounds activities, court hearings, community service, related activities or emergencies. 
  19. May attend sentencing and restitution review court hearings in coordination with Probation Officer. 
  20. May attend treatment program staffing.
  21. Mandated overtime to ensure adequate staffing coverage and maintenance of safety for residents and clients at all times.
  22. Position requires the ability to work shift rotations to maintain minimum staffing requirements in 24/7 facilities, and in field assignments requiring non-routine work schedules.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  High school graduation or equivalent. 

Experience:  Two years of personal or professional experience navigating the juvenile justice system or working with youth in your community. 

 

Substitution:  Two years of college with emphasis in the behavioral sciences may substitute for the experience requirements. 

Certifications/Licensure: Driver's License required. 

Exam/Screening Process Information

The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated:   
 

  • Training and Experience Rating = 100%    
The examination for Assistant Probation Officer will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating.  The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions – do not mark "see resume" or "see work history" as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely.  Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.

Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Assistant Probation Officer. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 30 days or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been posted and their rank on the list.

Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
