
General Duty Statement Performs responsible work relating to the City’s Urban Forestry program to include tree and shrub identification and inspections, ground maintenance, and landscaping. Works with contractors, crews, community groups, and residents to implement contracts and agreements, serve on committees, and lead community events. Participates in planning, implementing, and maintaining urban forestry projects and unit management plans. Assists with and conducts tree inspections to assess the state of the urban forest; monitors tree heath and prescribes treatments when needed; and completes field work under varying weather conditions. Participates in community outreach and provides education on related topics as directed. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Information Specific to this Position: Forestry typically operates on a Monday-Friday, 7:00 am-3:30 pm schedule, however, the Urban Forestry Technician will be expected to work some evening and weekend hours as needed. The Urban Forestry Technician will report to the Como Central Services Facility of the Parks & Recreation Department located at 1100 Hamline Avenue North in Saint Paul, however, much of the work associated with the position involves field work throughout the City of Saint Paul.
Primary Responsibilities include:
Assist higher level staff with the Emerald Ash Borer Management Program including associated field work Assist higher level staff with the Citywide Planting Program including associated field work, tree inventory, and supervision of city-hired contractors Assist with coordination of annual Arbor Day events, Tree Steward volunteer events, and volunteer events Performing routine tree inspections Managing Forestry’s website and social media accounts Essential Functions are the functions that the individual holding the position must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation. Eligible Lists created from Open Job Posting: This job posting is open to anyone who meets the position requirements. Non-promotion eligible lists typically are pass/fail and promotion eligible lists are typically ranked. Those who pass the assessment will be placed on an eligible list for approximately one year. If the open eligible list created contains a veteran, one open list will exist. When there are no veterans remaining on the eligible list (i.e. hired, withdrawn) from an open list that also contains promotional candidates, two lists will be created: one open list and one promotion list. If two lists exist, the promotion list must be exhausted before the open list is considered.
Final Selection Process: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.

Qualifications
Requirements Requirements may be met by one of the following options:
A Bachelor's Degree in Forestry, Urban Forestry or a closely related field. Up to four years of field experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis. An Associate’s degree in Forestry, Urban Forestry or a closely related field and two years of related work experience. Up to two years of field experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
Must obtain a Minnesota Tree Inspector Certification within one year of hire.
Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License or equivalent out of state driver's license.
