BASIC FUNCTION:
To perform customer service and program support duties, such as answering telephones, talking with visitors about a variety of natural history topics, directing clients or visitors to proper location, setting up and taking down equipment and supplies for programs, assisting with live animal care, selling and collecting tickets; to present standardized interpretive nature, environmental education and recreation programs in Ramsey County parks and open space, primarily at Tamarack Nature Center (TNC); and to perform related duties as assigned.
The current vacancies are with Tamarack Nature Center and Parks & Recreation Programming. There is no guarantee of a specific number of hours or a regularly assigned schedule and employees may be called to work weekday, weekend, evening, or holiday hours (non-benefit eligible).
Tamarack Nature Center: Perform visitor service, program support, and office duties; clean and maintain facilities, set up and take down equipment and supplies for programs and events; assist with live animal care and garden tending as needed; present standardized interpretive nature and recreation programs to the public. Work takes place primarily at Tamarack Nature Center, but may also include occasional off-site duties.
Parks & Recreation Programming: Present nature and recreation programs and activities to the public with a high level of customer service, check-out equipment, clean and maintain equipment, demonstrate proper activity techniques, explain and maintain safety procedures, assist with community engagement and outreach. Programs occur at various park locations throughout Ramsey County, but may include some office duties such as data entry, returning phone calls and emails.
If an internal candidate is selected, salary will be set in accordance with the personnel rules (i.e., promotion, transfer, or voluntary reduction).

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Answer telephone calls and respond to public inquiries, explain park rules, direct visitors to locations and answer questions about a variety of natural history topics, conduct user surveys.
- Assist in the maintenance of collections by taking inventory of recreation equipment, organizing supplies, and maintaining records and files as directed.
- Contribute to the general operation of facilities by keeping the public areas and work spaces clean and well maintained; sweep, mop, shovel, dust, vacuum; set up and take down equipment (like tables and chairs) for programs and events.
- Prepare supplies and materials for upcoming programs and events.
- Present standardized nature interpretive and environmental education programs for all ages and audiences on natural history and outdoor recreation topics; assist in the delivery of special programs and events.
- Fit and rent cross-country ski and snowshoe equipment, collect rental fees, complete paperwork, and account for money received.
- Assist with planting, weeding, and watering of gardens; remove invasive plant species in natural habitats; assist with minor building repairs and grounds maintenance.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High School graduate, or equivalent.
Experience: None.
Substitution: None.
Certification/Licensure: None.
Preferred: Some high school coursework in the natural sciences, like biology, ecology, environmental science, earth science, geology, or similar area. Interest in nature education and recreation. - Exam/Screening Process Information

The examination process will consist of the following section weighted as indicated:
- Training and Experience Rating...….100%
Examination/Screening Process: The examination for Naturalist Aide will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on the answers provided. A candidate must pass the training and experience rating in order to be advanced in the process.
Eligible List: The names of all applicants who file a properly completed application and pass the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment as an Naturalist Aide. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for one month or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been posted and their rank on the list.
Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
Criminal Background Checks: All employment offers are conditioned upon the applicant passing a criminal background check. Convictions are not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered on its individual merits and the type of work sought. However, making false statements or withholding information will cause you to be barred from employment, or removed from employment.
E-Verify Participation:
Ramsey County participates in the federal E-Verify program. This means that Ramsey County will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
