Manufacturing and Construction Essentials

FREE, SHORT-TERM PROGRAM FOR PEOPLE WHO QUALIFY!

Unionized construction and manufacturing businesses in Minnesota are looking for more trained workers. These jobs pay well and come with good benefits and working conditions. Our in-person and online services will help train and connect you to these jobs with specialized assistance that meets the needs of busy adult learners. The program includes job skills training on-site at Saint Paul College, a work experience opportunity with stipend, and a full array of work readiness and job search assistance. 

More about the 3 components of the short-term training at Saint Paul College: 

Hand and Power Tool Familiarization - This course introduces participants to hand and power tools that are most widely used in the Manufacturing and Construction industries, such as impact devices, saws, levels, drills, sanders, grinders and material removal equipment. The course explains specific applications for these tools and how to use them safely – and properly through hands on instruction.

Shop Calculation - This course will help participants understand the fundamentals of measurement devices, and proper application(s) for use in both the construction and Manufacturing industries. Participants will also be introduced to blueprint reading and schematic essentials for proper material calculation such as square footage, surface area, and estimating.

OSHA-10 - The OSHA 10 course is designed to familiarize participants with general industry OSHA standards as well as safety and health hazards common to the workplace. This course will focus on providing a foundation for employees to identify, avoid, control, and prevent jobsite hazards. Completing participants will receive their OSHA-10 certification and card (must be present for all class hours).

Keep in mind this training at Saint Paul College is only one part of the program experience. You'll take part in many other program services as well to give you a well-rounded introduction to construction and manufacturing careers.

Enrollment & Eligibility

• Be 18 years of age or older, not enrolled in a K-12 school, and eligible to work in the U.S.
• Have a high school diploma or GED
• Individuals who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color; individuals who are unemployed or underemployed; & women are encouraged to apply.

Work Experience Opportunity

As part of the program, you'll complete a 100-hour work experience opportunity with a construction or manufacturing employer. You will receive a stipend for participating in this hands-on learning opportunity, which will give you additional skills, hands-on experience, and future work references.
