Primary Function of the Position This position is for individuals interested in taking part in a training program to become licensed as a Class B Commercial School Bus Driver with a passenger endorsement and school bus endorsement. The training program involves classroom training as well as driver training under the supervision of a certified training instructor. The School Bus Driver Trainee position is a temporary job position. The incumbent is paid as a temporary employee while in this job. There is no guarantee that a School Bus Driver Trainee who successfully completes the training will be hired as a regular or temporary licensed School Bus Driver upon completion of the training. Under the direction of the Supervising School Bus Driver, trainees learn to operate and maintain a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to assigned locations using designated routes; assure safety of vehicle by learning to perform daily safety inspections and cleaning duties.
This trainee position is distinguished from the School Bus Driver position by the absence of a Class B Commercial license which permits solo bus driving. Trainees may not carry passengers or use a cell phone while operating a commercial vehicle. This position is limited to temporary assignments.
After the Trainee has held their Commercial Learning Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days, the Trainee may take the MN CDL exam. Successful completion of the training program requires the incumbent to pass the DMV Class B Commercial license exam, obtain a Passenger (P) Endorsement, school bus (S) endorsement, and a Department of Transportation Medical Certificate/MCSA-5875 Report Form.
If the Bus Driver Trainee does not pass the DMV Class B CDL exam with Passenger and School Bus endorsements after 3 successive training cycles, their employment will automatically end unless there are verifiable mitigating circumstances.

Responsibilities
Position Responsibilities • Participates in school bus driver training which involves classroom teaching, skills development, and practical instruction on the safe operation of a school bus. • Practices pre-trip and post-trip comprehensive mechanical and safety vehicle system checks including fluid levels, basic operating systems. • Learns fixed route services. Begins to provide general information about routes and services to patrons and the general public over the telephone. • Learns how to communicate with other operators and with base station via two-way radio • Learns how to provide customer service to students. Participates in observing and managing student behavior on buses and at pick up/drop off locations. • Attends required safety meetings and training. • Learns and then performs minor maintenance on vehicles as needed, such as coolant, engine fluids check, etc. • Cleans assigned school bus, keeps all applicable boarding/mileage records & mechanical checklists. Operates a school bus over a designated route in accordance with arranged time schedules • Establishes and maintains a good working relationship with fellow school bus drivers, HAP transportation and maintenance employees, students, and school staff. • Understand how to document accidents and incident reports with clear knowledge of proper documentation skills. • Able to adapt to unexpected situations with a strong mindset of opening to new learning.
Qualifications
Education and Experience • Possession of high school diploma or receipt of G.E.D. certificate • Possession of a valid Minnesota Class C Driver’s License • Possess a current MN Class B Commercial Driver’s Permit • Applicants must have a clean driving record. This means they must meet the following criteria: o Have held a valid driver's license for at least one year o Have not had more than one license o Have not had any license suspended, revoked, or canceled o Have not had any conviction for disqualifying offenses or serious traffic violations o Have not had any conviction for a traffic violation arising in connection with any traffic accident, and have no record of an accident in which they were at fault • Must pass a drug and alcohol test prior to commencement of training.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities • Safe, defensive driving practices • Minnesota Motor Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of vehicles • Understanding basic vehicle maintenance and related equipment. • Ability to safely operate a vehicle consistent with all applicable laws and regulations. • Good customer service skills • Understand and fulfill verbal and written instructions • Establishing and keeping good working relationships with fellow school bus drivers, HAP transportation and maintenance employees, students, and school staff. • Strong knowledge of road safety, route map, and surrounding areas.
