Additional information about the position: There are currently vacancies within the Saint Paul Fleet Services Division at the 891 Dale Street facility with options for repairing both light/heavy duty vehicles and equipment and within the Saint Paul Fire Department at the 1683 Energy Park Drive Public Safety Garage working on Fire Ladders, Engines, Squads and Ambulances.  **Please Note: The city will be holding interviews throughout the course of the posting to fill immediate vacancies.

 

Responsibilities

Duties: 

  • Performs skilled labor in the repair and maintenance of complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic power systems. Services, repairs, and maintains City vehicles and equipment, such as heavy trucks, diesel, construction equipment, fire apparatus, grounds maintenance equipment, forestry equipment, turf, hybrid, or electric vehicles, and other related equipment and accessories. Operates a variety of testing devices to determine nature and extent of malfunction or damage. Inspects, diagnoses, services, and repairs multiplex electrical systems used on trucks, grounds equipment, turf equipment, and fire apparatus. Uses various computerized diagnostic equipment and software applications in the maintenance and repair of trucks, equipment, fire apparatus, and mechanical systems that may include power trains, electrical and multiplex electrical systems of fire apparatus and/or other heavy trucks and equipment. Inspects, diagnoses, maintains, and repairs water and hydraulic pump systems. Utilizes shop tools and welders to repair and fabricate mounts, hangers, containers, and related units for holding, storing, and mounting tools and equipment as required. Cleans, inspects, maintains, and repairs firefighting aerial ladders and related aerial ladder hydraulic systems. Inspects, diagnoses, maintains, and repairs street sweepers, loaders, pavers, and other heavy equipment. Uses hand tools, power tools, and related equipment to maintain and/or repair complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic power systems. Documents and records all maintenance, repairs, parts, labor costs, and other related information in electronic fleet information systems. Inspects and ensures warranty work performed on trucks and equipment meets required standard. Maintains a clean and safe work environment. Must be able to work a regular schedule as assigned.</p> <p>The eligible list created from this assessment will also be used to fill Vehicle Technician positions as they become available in various departments within the City.

Qualifications

Requirements may be met by ONE of the following options: 

  • Successful completion of a two year heavy truck and/or heavy equipment repair vocational program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of experience maintaining and repairing heavy trucks and/or equipment. 
  • Successful completion of a two year automotive repair vocational program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) repairing automobiles, trucks, and/or heavy equipment. 
  • Successful completion of a documented, mechanical/repair apprenticeship program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of experience maintaining and repairing mechanical systems, automobiles/light duty vehicles, or heavy trucks and/or equipment. 
  • Successful completion of a small engine or turf and grounds equipment vocational program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of experience performing maintenance and repairs on some of the following equipment classes; small engine/grounds/turf equipment, automotive/light duty vehicles, or heavy trucks and/or equipment. 
  • Six years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of increasingly responsible experience performing maintenance and repairs on some of the following equipment classes: small engine/grounds/turf equipment, automotive/light duty vehicles, or heavy trucks and/or equipment. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license, or equivalent out-of-state driver's license.

Within 12 months of employment candidates must meet these Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements:

  • For positions with Fleet Services, candidates must obtain and maintain a valid Class A CDL with no restrictions for air brakes within 12 months of employment. The CDL must have no suspensions or revocations for driving related offenses within the two year period prior to date of appointment. Suspensions for parking related offenses are excluded. 
  • For positions with Saint Paul Fire Department, candidates must obtain and maintain a valid Class B CDL with no restrictions for air brakes within 12 months of employment. The CDL must have no suspensions or revocations for driving related offenses within the two year period prior to date of appointment. Suspensions for parking related offenses are excluded. 
  • For positions with Saint Paul Regional Water Services, candidates must obtain and maintain a valid Class A CDL with no restrictions for air brakes within 12 months of employment. The CDL must have no suspensions or revocations for driving related offenses within the two year period prior to date of appointment. Suspensions for parking related offenses are excluded.
