Responsibilities

Basic Function

The Ramsey County Elections office has a great public service opportunity to learn about administering elections in 2022. Ramsey County Elections is a nonpartisan office that serves Saint Paul and surrounding Ramsey County suburbs.

Applicants or candidates chosen for appointment from this process will not gain any rights or preference for other permanent Ramsey County positions.

General Description:
In this position, you will be assisting staff in the nonpartisan administration of the state primary and the state general election in Ramsey County. Persons selected will assist elections staff in administration of one or more of the following areas: voter registration, absentee voting, voting systems or polling place logistics.

Normal business hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Full-time and part-time hours available; minimum of 20 hours per week required; with longer working hours possible at other times, including election days. Flexible hours to accommodate class schedules is possible. 

Examples of Work Performed

Typical duties will include:

  1. Reviewing election documents submitted by voters, other counties, and the secretary of state's office for legal compliance.
  2. Using the statewide database to process election documents with a high level of accuracy on a daily basis, meeting deadlines.
  3. Preparing and testing computerized voting equipment for use in state elections.
  4. Preparing polling place materials and equipment.
  5. Providing excellent customer service to the public.
  6. Answering questions from voters on basic election procedures by phone and email.
  7. Performing other administrative tasks as assigned.
  8. Interact with election judges.
Persons selected for appointment will be expected to:
 
  • Convey detailed information to the public.
  • Demonstrate exceptional organizational skills; ability to prioritize multiple sometimes competing tasks without sacrificing quality of work.
  • Serve as a central resource of information and provide assistance to voters.
  • Work independently on routine daily assignments that require close attention to detail.
  • Follow instructions completely and accurately.
  • Provide nonpartisan, impartial and excellent customer service.
  • Meet daily deadlines according to the Minnesota election law.
  • Interact fairly, impartially and with a large and diverse population of voters.
  • Use problem solving techniques to complete daily work assignments.
  • Use a computer, with a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand or sit for extended.

Working Conditions: Assigned duties are performed in an office setting; unless assigned to the elections warehouse. Dresscode is business casual.

Experience working in an election-related activity or for an elected official.

Exam/Screening Process Information

Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process.  Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process.  Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
